Crossroads in Winter

This is a little bit like a still from a dream. I remember my early childhood conception of the unknown territory of the quiet middle of the night – a time I didn’t really believe existed because I had never seen it. That made it seem impossibly magical, and even as I have come to know the late night hours through experience, something of that magic still adheres to it. This slightly surreal scene is set on the corner where I live.

This painting was selected for inclusion in the New Mexico Arts League fall 2022 juried show “After Dark”.

La Bajada is a prominent geographical feature between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The name (“descent”) applies from the Santa Fe perspective in the north. From the south, it’s definitely a serious ascent, and when you get to the top, you’re in a different world.

Bosque at Evening, Winter after the Fire

In the heat of the summer in 2020, the bosque near my studio caught fire. The wind blew embers across the ditch, and we started to evacuate, but the wind died down and the fire receded. Many of the large trees survived, and the facade of the forest, seen from the fields nearby, is mainly unchanged. But if you walk among the trees in the winter, the charred trunks of trees stand like black and brown pillars in a ruined cathedral, with light flowing in from where the ceiling used to be, and new growth from after the fire is waiting to leaf out in spring.
